Born in Merseyside, Trademark studied at the Wallasey school of art and design before re-locating to london in 1978, where he became a key face on the burgeoning new romantic scene frequenting clubs such as blitz and painting friends like boy george, david sylvian (japan) and steve strange. these early paintings of underground club/pop culture were exhibited at londons ebury street gallery in 1983 and were also featured on channel 4s pop programme the tube where mark was interviewed by another of his subjects the late paula yates. In 1986 he met andy warhol who commissioned one of the hand painted t shirts mark was selling through designer paul smiths shops. this seal of approval from his ultimate hero was a key moment in trademarks life,validating his pop art aspirations. Throughout the latter part of the 80s marks creative energies were harnessed by the music industry and he storyboarded and art directed videos for many major artists including, bryan ferry, queen,julian lennon, talk-talk and psychedelic furs. In 1990 club promoter laurence malice commissioned mark to create the visual identity for a new club he was starting, londons first legal all nighter and future club legend trade this provided a context, focus and showcase for marks unique pop inspired artwork and the brand-name trademark was born. this coincided with the birth of sohos new gay identity as bars and businesses like village and kudos exploded out of the basements and sidestreets. trademarks striking imagery branded this new revolution in city life, establishing him the capitals coolest image maker, producing club flyers, record and magazine covers, disco-decor and 1993s controversial gay targeted absolut vodka campaign. since his commercial success, this disco revolutionary has returned primarily to painting where his razor sharp acrylic on canvas images have received critical acclaim in recent exhibitions and can be found in the collections of prominent media and entertainment figures. in 1999 examples of trademarks artwork were included in the museum of londons club culture exhibition and in 2005 he was included in homotopia at the liverpool biennale, he was also the only non-photographic artist to be featured in homme -masterpieces of male erotic photography- published by carlton books. |
